Although I was born in New York to Greek parents I always kept in touch with my Greek heritage. I went to church, to Greek gatherings and as a child I traveled to Greece very often. Greece is a wonderful place and I still love going there a lot. I think that Greek culture is a wonderful thing. I like how mane people globally have embraced the Greek culture in one way or another. Not to sound conceded or anything….But the Greeks invented everything….lol In general Greek culture, I think is the spirit of a community which in most cases is bound together by significant social gatherings surrounding religious and traditional events. In most places around the world, especially when the population of the Greek diaspora was very small and the Greek Community even smaller those important gatherings would be held through the Greek Orthodox Church. I remember learning in history that Greek culture was spread out over the whole known world at some point, Asia Minor as well as large parts of Asia with the Greek Macedonian conquests of Alexander the Great. Eventually it is Rome who becomes the new world power. Greek culture is becoming more and more entrenched in contemporary and mainstream world culture and Greeks of the Diaspora are committed to recognition of this through its program of events. As the eyes of the world turn to all things Greek we are planning an extra special program of events and initiatives that will include influences from all aspects of Greek Culture, not least the Olympic Games. Greek culture is a major force behind most of what we know today. In government the Greeks practiced pure democracy. Greek culture is closely intertwined with the liturgical calendar. There are religious days all through the year, which are national holidays in Cyprus. Anyhow, as you can see I am very proud of my Greek culture. I am Emily and I am Greek.
