I Absolutely Love Ancient Greek History
I absolutely love Greek History. Greek Heritage is mostly based on Greek History and thats why I love it. Greek history is full of intrigue, war, action and many life lessons. Sometimes I wish I lived in ancient Greek times and not in this modern world. As some of you might now by now, ancient Greece was not a unified country. It was broken up into more than 100 different poleis , with different laws, standards, and customs. Ancient Greece was divided into many small areas called city-states. The above picture is of Athens, the largest city-state in ancient Greece. Ancient Greece was a sexually charged country with a very tolerant view towards sex and sexuality. This was seen in the Olympics- which was done in the nude- to the art- sculptures, and paintings were mostly if not all of the people were naked and the penis and breasts were in great detail. The Greeks without knowing gave homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality and sexuality in general a voice. Ancient Greece was made up of many small “city states”. These were cities and the land around them, and they had their own laws and rulers. Ancient Greece was divided into many city-states. All of the city-states were ruled by a type of government called a democracy, the type of government we have in the United States. Ancient Greece was a very socially unequal place. Ancient Greece was very much a patriarchal society. Sports were reserved for men. Ancient Greece was the birthplace of this ideology, and its practice died with it. Ancient Greece was made up of a number of independent city-states. There were very little rich people there, mostly poor people. Ancient Greece was made up of small city states, of which Sparta and Athens were two. Athens was celebrated as a center of wisdom and learning. Citizens consisted of free male citizens who had completed their military training, which generally meant above the age of twenty. Since some issues required a quorum of 6,000 for a valid vote, it was essential for citizens to take an active part in public affairs. Citizens of foreign countries, they fell in love with Greek ideals (mainly ancient) or revolutionary ideals in general. A great number of philhellenes fought and died on greek soil. Greek Women in ancient Greece were quite modest as far as their clothing was concerned. Here is a detailed look at ancient Greek fashion. Women were allowed to run in a certain foot race if they were virgins. They had to run barefoot, wearing a dress that came up over the left shoulder, and competely exposed the right breast. Women is Sparta however were greatly influential in society, had rights and were sometimes the dominant partner in households. To simplify these two very separate cultures we will first look at Greek Athenian women.
